2016 Wedding Cake Trends

Today I am excited to feature Jessica of Cake Delights, a local wedding and specialty cake baker and decorator in Hampton Roads. She is both talented and kind, a wonderful person to work with, and above all her cakes look and taste incredible! Here are her predictions for 2016 wedding cake trends.

Much like fashion, cake designs can come in and out style and set new trends each year!  Whether soft and romantic or bold and colorful, the cake can be a wonderful focal point for any reception.

Buttercream is seemingly the preferred icing for its rich soft flavor, and bakers have been creative in using it for new updated designs. It is often used to create a variety of textures ranging from rustic to formal, random swirls to perfect lines. Adding pastel colors for ombre or watercolor effects is also popular, as is piped ruffles or rosettes.  And let’s not dismiss the naked cake trend!  While sometimes only a sprinkling of powdered sugar is on the outside, often a thin crumbcoat of buttercream is added. And of course, fondant is still ideal for flowing ruffles or as a canvas for painted cakes.

Metallics are often coming into play, especially golds tones. Whether using dragees (sugar beads), gold/silver leaf, or edible paints, adding metallic accents can add a dramatic effect to any cake.

Florals are also taking center stage. It doesn’t matter sugar or fresh, flowers can be a key focal point on any cake.  Many couples are considering creative groupings or a flowing halo of fresh greenery instead of the traditional cascade.

Cakes are also incorporating different heights to the standard 4” tier. Often simply adding a smaller 2” tier, a taller 6” tier, or even a tier of a different shape is a great way to add visual interest to a classic design.

Aside from cakes, couples can be creative in their wedding desserts!  While cake is classic, some couples opt for beautifully decorating macarons, cupcakes, variety of pies, bite size desserts, or even a tower of donuts!  Not just design, but flavors and offerings can be a reflection of the couple’s style, so anything goes!
