When two people are already married, you would assume that the magic of the wedding is long gone. Michael and Sarah had a quick ceremony a few months ago because of his upcoming deployment, but still planned a day to gather their friends and family together to celebrate. And oh what a day it was! Despite the fact that they were already husband and wife, Michael had the best reaction I have ever witnessed when he saw his bride walk down the aisle. He cried, he covered his eyes...he couldn't believe she was really his, even if she had been for months.

The whole wedding was a tribute to Michael and Sarah's relationship. They met in the military but bonded over their love of Fall Out 4, a video game Sarah paid homage to with incredibly intricate decorations. Their invitation suite and place settings featured old-school records, the bride's dress was both beautiful and non-traditional, and the whole wedding was so unique to who they are as a couple.

Michael and Sarah are heading off to Japan...

Planning a winter wedding is always a little risky, and when the forecast calls for rain all day it can make anyone's spirits a little gloomy. But Spencer and Samantha handled the day like pros, calmly adjusting to the situation and laughing at the circumstances of their wedding. By the end, they both had decided that rainy day pictures are the best and nothing could dampen the happiness surrounding their wedding day.

Watching these two interact with each other and their families was beautiful to witness. "Uncle Spencer and Aunt Samantha" were both highly popular among their nieces and nephews, as each little one hugged and congratulated the newly married couple. When it came time for bride and groom portraits, Spencer and Sam breezed through. They kept their eyes locked on each other, he shielded her from the rain, and they joked and laughed as the goofy people they are together. Giddy and excited at the reality of getting to spend forever together, the day could not have been more perfect - rain or shine...

Best of Weddings in 2016 | Business

The beginning of each year feels like a blank slate. We do not know what is coming in 2017, but we can look back on this last year and hope for the good to remain the same and for the not-so-good to change in the new year. At the beginning of 2016 I had no idea what was in store for me both personally and professionally. All I knew was the weddings I had scheduled at the time and the excitement of the unknown. Though it was personally the hardest year of our lives, I can be nothing if not thankful as I look over the business aspect of the past year.

Travel was a huge theme for me, and weddings this year brought me all over Hampton Roads, to Richmond, and even further to Philadelphia and Nashville. It's such an incredible privilege to not only photograph a wedding day but to travel across many miles and even state borders to be there, and it's one I don't take lightly.

This year was also a huge mark of growth in my life as a photographer. I picked a few things to focus on in each wedding so I could continue getting better every time I showed up. Looking back on the beginning of the year versus where I am now, I can honestly say that the hard work and focus paid off, and I found myself in a great rhythm as the year came to a close.

So what's coming in 2017? So far I have weddings booked, excitement ahead, and couples who will soon say I do. Until then, enjoy some of my absolute favorites from 2016 - and man was it hard to pare this blog of images down!
