Slowing Down the Creativity | Monday Musings

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was still processing all that I learned from Designer Trek this year. One of my biggest takeaways came from a few discussions I had with some other graphic designers about the creative process. As a photographer – or any creator – it’s easy to be focused on the end product, whether it’s an image or a graphic or a website. I know that my thought process as I photograph weddings and family sessions is all about what the final image will look like.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, I realized I am losing something big when I focus on the end product – I am forgetting the process of getting there. One thing I was struggling with when I went to Lake Tahoe was creativity. I have photographed so many sessions and weddings recently that it became hard to be freshly inspired each time I arrived. While there are other photographers I greatly admire who can shoot every day and never become boring, I was struggling to ensure that I truly capture who a couple or family is rather than make easy choices when it came to posing, locations, and lighting...

Our Downtown Norfolk Anniversary Session | Personal

Nathan and I didn't date for a very long time before we got engaged - 11 months to be exact. Six months and one week after we were married. I have always thought of our relationship as short since several of our friends were together for many years before getting engaged and married, but then I realized that this August will mark 7 years of being together with Nathan.

Marriage changes you. Or you change and your marriage grows with it - I'm not sure. Either way it goes I can see more and more that love is a daily choice, and staying married is not something that just happens to anyone. As beautiful as our relationship looks (and is) on the outside, strong marriages are usually built through the fires of testing and trials, both inside the relationship and in our own personal lives.

5 Things I'm Loving Lately | Personal

I wrote a post a few months back about 6 things that have made my life better as of late - and I'm back to give an update! From camera straps to podcast and the people that surround me, here are a few of my (current) favorite things.

1) My brand new RL Handcrafts cross-body strap. This is absolutely number one - and I could write a whole blog post just about my new strap! I have severe tendinitis in my right wrist from a bone break I went through as a child that I never fully healed from. Last season I started to worry that I wouldn't be able to physically shoot weddings for too much longer because I would be so sore and swollen the next day. Enter this cross-body strap! It's genuine leather and looks awesome, but more than that it takes all the weight off my wrist and balances onto my shoulders. I can drop the camera and it falls to safely since it's hooked safely onto me, and I can pick it up at a moment's notice. This has literally been life changing and my body is thanking me for it...
