It’s not often that, nearly a decade after graduating, I still get to connect with college friends from Virginia Tech. Matt and I met through Baptist Collegiate Ministries there and weathered the perils of college and statistics class together. Somehow, with late nights and cookie logs (try one if you haven’t!), we both passed, graduated, got married…and each have a kid! It’s a little crazy to think about, but here we are, the adults we never thought we would become.

Every other year, Matt’s family rents a beach house in the Outer Banks to spend time together as part of their tradition. I got to meet them down there just a few days after Hurricane Florence and amazingly, the roads were open and the rain held off! I got to meet Sam, his one-year-old, and get re-acquainted with some of his family whom I met when I visited Hampton Roads years ago as Nathan’s girlfriend…

I Never Thought I'd Do this, But... | Personal

I think you can easily guess the topic for this blog post. Through the years, especially prior to becoming a parent, there are things I swore I would never do. This involved a certain amount of pride (are my standards really that much higher than everyone else’s?) and just some general ignorance about why I might make decisions in one way versus another. In the interest of full disclosure and my constant pursuit of humility (and humor), I thought I would look back on some of the things I promised not to do…and have since decided there is a better way :) Enjoy a blog at my expense!

1) I swore I would never be religious about nap time…

Hurricane Florence was a nightmare for so many people last weekend, and continues to cause devastation throughout the Carolinas and beyond. The severity of what could have been in Virginia was sobering, so when it looked like the eye of the storm was heading for Hampton Roads, everything shut down - people evacuated, plans were cancelled, and everyone settled in for the unknown. And then - nothing happened. There was hardly any rain, let alone a hurricane, and just like that everything was back to normal.

For Harrison and Lauren, their entire wedding was changed. At the last minute they were left without a venue or a plan. A day that should have been at the Planter’s Club was suddenly moved to his parents’ house. Vendors changed, the vision was different, and truthfully, everyone should have been emotional on Saturday - and not necessarily in a good way!
