The Struggles of Dating | Our Story

As every person who has ever been in any kind of relationship knows, everything is not always rainbows and butterflies. Dating and marriage relationships seem to bring out the best and the worst in people, and my relationship with Nathan was no exception. As happy as we were and are, the road to where we are today is not free of bumps and bruises.

We were a little different than most couples in that we didn't actually fight during our time of dating. We did get aggravated or annoyed at each other, but the frustrations never spilled over at the same time. It seemed that if one of us was angry the other was able to stay calm, and we never dissolved into a huge argument. When I look back on that time I laugh, because we have definitely fought in our married lives together!

The First Date | Our Story

I left you hanging a little bit last week (read the post here), but to recap, I spent the summer in South Africa as our friendship grew through emails and phone calls. At the end of my time there, Nathan called me one day and told me that he was interested in being more than friends when I came back home. I wasn't surprised (he'd spent a lot of time and money calling me over the summer!), but I was extremely excited.

When school was starting again, Nathan left for Blacksburg a few days early and stopped in Roanoke, where I lived at the time. That was our first official date! He took me to Olive Garden (and totally embarrassed me by asking in front of the waitress if I wanted to sit in the smoking section of if I'd 'kicked the habit!') and we ate breadsticks and talked. After that, we hung out at the mall and walked around for a little while. To be honest, it was a little awkward going from typing and halted phone calls to being with each other, but somehow it just worked. We left as friends, but I was hoping it wouldn't be that way for long :)

How We Met | Our Story

How We Met | Our Story

Now that you know a little bit of where we were before we met each other, here's the fun part - how we actually got together! We went to college together at Virginia Tech, which is where our story began. I don't know the exact date we first met, but I do remember going over to Nathan's apartment in January 2010 (7 months before we started dating). I also remember that I went over to his place with my then-boyfriend, so needless to say we had no idea what the fairly near future held.

After that day, I saw Nathan around a couple times but never really talked to him. We went to the same campus ministry (Baptist Collegiate Ministries), so we did see each other from time to time. My boyfriend and I broke up that March, and in April the BCM took a trip to Radford University to lead their campus ministry's worship night. To this day I can't tell you why I did this, but I wanted to ride with Nathan that day. So I did the normal thing and signed up as a volunteer to make the ride lists...of course being sure that he and I were in the same car...
