What if I Want to be a Photographer? | Monday Musings

Last week I received an email that I've talked about in-person many times before. It was from a woman wanting to start a photography business. She has taken pictures for fun in the past but never professionally, and she wanted to know how to begin down that road. She had some great questions about how I got started and what I would recommend for her.

I realized that since so many of you have been following my journey from the beginning I've never written a blog about this - but with lots of newer faces around since four whole years ago, I decided to write about my journey and what I would recommend to anyone wanting to get started as a professional photographer. Here's my best advice!

1) Learn as much as you can without practicing...

Welcome, Off-Season! | Monday Musings

Welcome, Off-Season! | Monday Musings

The off-season is finally here! My year went a little bit later than normal, wrapping up with an amazing wedding in Nashville that I can't believe I got to photograph! What a dream come true! While I do have another wedding in less than a month (back at the Washington, D.C., LDS Temple no less!) I think I can officially say that my off-season has begun.

I always feel a wild sense of accomplishment when I wrap up weddings for the year. There's a little bit of a break since almost nobody (except, you know, me!) get married during the winter. I'm completely ok with that, since I am not good friends with the cold anyways! Besides incredible amounts of rest that will happen between now and the kick-off to the 2017 season, I will finally be able to sit down and knock out my list of goals between now and then. During busy season I am in maintenance mode, but in off-season I am in improvement mode all the way...

Dylan & Mary Durr // Wedding

I am so blessed to be able to work full-time at a job that I really enjoy! I am even more blessed by my coworkers, who have become like family to me. I have the privilege or working with Tracye every day, and it is beyond wonderful. She's my work mom :) When I found out that her oldest son, Dylan, was engaged, I was SO excited! It was even more exciting to be able to take engagement pictures, and then follow up by shooting their wedding!

The day of the wedding was beautiful. Mary and Dylan were both SO relaxed, and genuinely just had a great time with their friends, family, and each other.  It was a packed house at the ceremony - so many people had come to wish the couple happiness in their life together!

During their ceremony, Dylan and Mary took some time to pray together privately. I've never seen that - usually it's the unity candle/sand/something else - but I loved it. What a great way to start off a marriage.

Dylan and Mary - congratulations! I wish you the best life together and all the happiness in the world. Thanks for letting me be there for your special day. It was truly a blessing!
