How do I narrow down my favorite portraits of the year when Iโ€™ve had so many beautiful couples and families in front of my lens? The answer is that itโ€™s not easy, but there were a few things that stood out to me as I looked back on the year.

The first is joy. Each person here is expressing joy at being together, getting married, growing their family, or simply being a family. The laughter and emotion feels so real, even through the screen. These are some of the most joyful people on earth, and it was my privilege to capture some of the best days of their lives - with many more yet to come.

The other thing that stands out to me isโ€ฆ

Albemarle Estate Anniversary Session | Charlottesville Wedding Photographer | Brad + Lauren

Maybe I'm getting old, but time seems to move faster and faster each year. It's hard to believe that Brad and Lauren got married over one year ago, and two years before that we met for the first time to capture their engagement session. When they contacted me a few months in advance (because she is a planner, through and through!) about an anniversary session at the same place it all began, I was thrilled.

Here's a little sneak peek, though, into what makes this couple so special. Rather than simply asking me to drive to Charlottesville for their pictures, they added on a special lunch at the amazing C&O Restaurant, inviting all their wedding vendors as a 'thank you' one year later. I have never heard of this before, and I was simply amazed at their generosity. It was such a fun chance to reconnect with what now feels like old friends, with Brad and Lauren at the top of that list. We all feel a little sad when the wedding day is over, so to continue that relationship (even though they live hours away!) is an incredible blessingโ€ฆ

There's nothing like being engaged. It's one of the times in your life when you are absolutely sure of what's coming next. You are in love more than ever before and you know that you are loved. All the dreams you had about your wedding day will unfold over the next few months. Decisions will be made, cakes will be tasted, and the countdown will begin. But the feeling of being assuredly in love, with the bright hope of a future together, is one of the most beautiful things of all.

Seeing couples engaged and in love is a wonderful part of being a wedding photographer. There is so much joy in the present time and what is to come. This year was filled with some of the most amazing times - from a stunning red dress at Regent University to an adventure-filled day hiking Natural Bridge all the way to the gorgeous Albemarle Estate at Trump Winery, it was a time I will never forget. As each of these couples steps closer to marriage - or said I do this year! - I pray their engagement session and their engagement season is one of the most memorable times of their lives.
